An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.
This is how Rotary responded to the influenza pandemic that began in 1918 and came in three waves, lasting more than a year.

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.
During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter.
Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”
Women are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.
The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.
Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”
In early 1919, Rotarian Roger Pinneo of Seattle, Washington, USA, traveled to the Philippines to try to organize a Rotary club in Manila. Leon J. Lambert, a Manila business leader helped Pinneo establish the club. Several months later, on 1 June 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was chartered and became the first Rotary club in Asia.
The club would be the only one in the country for more than 12 years. Eventually, Manila club members organized Rotary clubs in the Philippine cities of Cebu (1932) and Iloilo (1933). Iloilo club members then started a club in Bacolod (1937), and Rotary continued to expand across the country.
The month of November is the month Rotary International dedicates to the programs and activities of the Rotary Foundation and this gives us a wonderful opportunity to focus our attention on the many great things that our foundation delivers to our world.

Last November, when Richard Potter and Norm Brasch represented RCBN on the annual trip by Beaumaris Rotary to Savu island, Indonesia a considerable amount of time is taken up trying to organise an e-mail connection for pastor Franz.
It appears that the efforts have now come to fruition and following is the very first e-mail ever sent by pastor Franz to anyone. It was addressed to John Manks, one of the participants in last year's visit to the island.
Seven Brighton North Rotarians accepted the invitation from Mark Owen, our Heritage Signage supporter in the Bayside Council, to the Bayside Business Breakfast at The International.
2012-13 contributions to the Annual Fund reached an all-time high, exceeding US$115 million for the first time ever! Achieving annual contributions of this magnitude is a reflection of the extraordinary work of Rotary leaders, like you, around the world. Thank you!
Please spread the word about how every Rotarian can make an impact in their communities and around the world, by supporting our Rotary Foundation every year. With your help, we can reach our visionary goal of US$120 million by 30 June 2014.
Our Changeover evening was a wonderful balance of the necessary pomp and ceremony and the usual social fun we all expect from RCBN events. Phil Mortimer took a range of photos some of which are featured below.
President Russell and Directors will present their plans for 2013 - 2014.This is an opportunity for you to hear what our Board and their teams have in store for the club's direction, be it avenues of service, foundation, fellowship, membership, marketing or fundraising, over the next twelve months.
We have just one member's birthday to celebrate this month: Happy Birthday, Peter Abbott.
Several partners have July birthdays including Janice Brasch, Jill Lawrence and Debbie Veitch.
However, it seems that none of our members actually joined RCBN in July.
I want to propose a huge "THANK YOU" to all weho have helped me with the RCBNews over the last 2 1/2 years.
Wonderful photos have been made ready in a timely way, mainly by Russell, Phil and Jeff although there have been some from other members too.
I've been fortunate to have the support of several scribes who have taken copious notes at our weekly meetings to ensure that members who miss the meeting do not miss out on our news. Jeff Taylor, Barrie Wood, Phil Wheatley and Peter Skelton have borne the brunt of this and others have contributed occasionally too. Phil Mortimer has been on hand throughout to help with training and fixing weird IT glitches that only he understands. And Jim has even found time to email me his memmorable quotes each week.
Thank you one and all.
Please do let me have any feedback that may help Lyn improve on a bulletin that I believe already gives excellent value to our members and friends. Next week will be a joint effort from Lyn and me as Lyn learns the ropes.
Your President and President Elect look forward to celebrating with you the year in Rotary and especially in the RCBN. We will also be welcoming in oiur new President and there will be much festivity.
Friday 28 June 2013 at 7.00 - 11.00 pm at Kingston Heath Golf Club. BE THERE!

(NB: this is 19 June not this week)
Another great evening of fun and information was enjoyed by our Rotarians on Wednesday 5 June 2013. The speaker, former Peace Scholar, Tori Anderson, gave an impassioned talk focussing on the world's child sex trade.
Still early days for your WebEditor to fully understand the changes however most of the changes are in the back-end administration modules and the way data is stored and accessed
Have a look at our up-dated website and let me know what you think (be nice)
We have many options to display content so will be experimenting with a few formats

Last week our Club was hosted by the Brighton Sea Scouts in their facilities at Wilson Street, Brighton. Last week's RCBnews contained the photos of the event (check it out - on the off chance that you may not have studied the RCBNews as yet). We have received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Scouts and it's enclosed for your information
Sunday April 28th was the day our club went 'public'!
Sponsorship by Brighton Honda and Francesca Presents, enabled us to put on our first RCBN initiated public event.
The audience was highly entertained by 5 very capable school bands from Firbank Grammar College, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, St. Leonard's College (2) and Star of the Sea, plus the 'professional' Jazz Doctors and solo musician Marceau.
The Festival of Sails was started in the 1840s by Royal Geelong

One of the great traditions of the Rotary Club of Brighton North occurs at our Christmas Party. Members of the club bring Christmas presents for children from disadvantaged backgrounds who come under the care of Family Life, one of the main local community organisations supported by the club. The presents are then handed out by Santa Claus at the Keith Street Community Centre Christmas Party. In many cases the presents provided by the members are the only gifts these children will receive at Christmas.

Don Cullen has just sent us a summary of his current activities in Tibet
Hi Everyone Perhaps "Tashe dalek" is more to the point, as you would know by now,
it means "Greetings" in Tibetan. I have attached a report on the
project that the International Committee supported on behalf of the club.
We have been blessed with a lot of success this trip.
Do your
friends and co-workers know that you're a Rotarian? Do you tell acquaintances
about your club's good works in the community or internationally?
Did you
know that talking about your involvement in Rotary could significantly enhance
the organisation's image and boost public awareness? It’s up to every Rotarian
to tell the world what Rotary is and does.

Rotary Club of Brighton North celebrated the inaugural Vocational Excellence Awards this week. Our congratulations go to Jan Brasch and Roy Bird. These two recipients of this new award set an extremely high standard for the future.
YOU are no doubt used to charities and businesses offering detailed analysis of their dealings, colourfully backed up with a zippy power point presentation and cool photos. Tonight, you have just me and, in keeping with the St Patrick’s Day theme, a story. The Irish love a tale – tall or otherwise. It’s a story of living in and leaving, Ireland, a story of St Patrick and a story about stories.
This whole adventure began with me Sean Orr (Navy) going for School Captain at my school Echuca College. Now normally I wouldn’t do this sort of thing but I had this urge to be the……… KING!!! So I thought I would give it a go. I’m actually a bit of a shy person and I’m not very good at talking to a big crowd; and I would have to make a speech and read it out to all my colleagues. We also had to have an interview with our school Principals, but despite all that, I did it.
Don Cullen (one of our Club Members) has provided a comprehensive update on the work he is doing with the Tibetan Village Project, Australia in Tibet. He is heading back there shortly so we look forward to news, pictures & stories from the "Land of Snows" when he returns in February 2011.

Members will recall the absolute delight on PP Ian Lawrence's face last September when he advised that Professor Delatycki and his team had been awarded a grant by NH&MRC of in excess of $750,000 to top up the $180,000 raised by our club and Australian Rotary Health for Friedreich's Ataxia research.
Prof Delatycki or someone from his team will present to bring us up to date regarding the research they are undertaking.
Our club has a great relationship with Prof Delatycki, a honorary member of our club and PHF, and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and it is intended that such relationship will continue.
Everyone present agreed this was a special meeting. For those who weren't there here's my "take" on it. For those who were there - some reminders about service projects...
Every April a day is designated Rotary at Work day. Along with thousands of other Rotarians around the globe Rotary Club of Brighton North (RCBN) members join in this annual event.
Each month we provide a summary of Board reports and actions so all members know what is happening at this level of our Club. April's report follows...
Pat Lardner sent a lovely newsy letter/email on St Patrick's Day to let us know what has been happening in his life back in Ireland. Well worth a read!
Somehow one of our most important people got missed last week. My apologies to Jeff who should have been in the list of Club Officers for next year: Jeff is taking over the Programme reins.
A lot of the meeting is covered elsewhere in this bulletin. Other morsels are included here... I have added in some notes about the health of a few members. Holidays seem fraught for some. Also there's an important request for anyone who can help with the Reading in School programme.

Looking forward to the new version.
The garden lovers of Melbourne (and WA, and NSW, and Qld. and New Zealand) were treated with 2 perfect days to view the 2012 Garden DesignFest. With over 16,000 garden visits across the 26 beautifully designed gardens our enthusiastic gardening community were really spoilt with the diversity and size of the gardens designed by Melbourne's leading designers.
The official Fashion in the Field has nothing on RCBN members and partners. What a comely lot - except perhaps that rather portly bookie...
As Chairman Geoff pointed out, our Club is doing a great deal of service work in our community and abroad. While enjoying hearing about all that is going on your Scribe thought the reports would never end.So what was there of importance to all members and friends?
There are several actions and notifications this week for members. Please can you try to find time in your busy schedules to read these and act upon them?
Our Scribe for last week's meeting was busy with other tasks during the meeting but still managed to come up with an interesting report for those of us who couldn't be there.
DG Dennis shared with us some special ideas for this Rotary year and in particular a "Rotarians at Work day" on Sunday 21 April 2013 being the anniversary of the day that Rotary commenced in Victoria with the chartering of the Rotary Club of Melbourne back in 1921.
Next week we welcome DG Dennis Shore and his wife Lynda to hear his message for Rotary in our District in this Rotary year.

For the last 20 years, the Rotary Club of Brighton North has hosted the annual Firbank versus Brighton Grammar Schools' Debate. Debating is the art of persuasion and this year's teams both presented a dynamic argument with the moot: "That the individual has the right to publish any photograph they take".
For this and other matters from the meeting read on.
For Rotarians it all begins with Vocation - Membership in Rotary is based on a member’s vocation, with each club striving to create a microcosm of its community’s business and professional world. This unique feature provides the source for Rotary’s historic commitment to vocational service, the second of Rotary’s four Avenues of Service. A brief (1 1/2 minute) video about Vocational Service can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1K4OpqX3Qc
Recently the RCBN visited the Murdoch Children's Research Institute to see and hear first hand about the research undertaken to improve the lives of children with cancer, allergies, diabetes, premature birth, mental health problems, genetic conditions and more. Staff spoke passionately and informatively about their work.
Each month RCBN is highlighting projects illustrating the Rotary International theme. October is Vocational Service Month and each week in October we will publish a brief story about one of our Vocational Service projects. Two years ago we introduced our Vocational Excellence Awards to honour people in our community who have given outstanding service in their workplace and wider.
Our Annual "Grand Final" meeting was extra special this year with Ross Smith sharing his long association with Australian Rules Football as a Premiership Player (1966), Club Champion (twice), Club Captain, Victorian Captain, Brownlow medalist (1967), Coach and more recently his involvement at the highest level in the AFL in the development and improvement of our Game.

Brief Summary of the this month's Board Meeting for members who want to be informed about Board decisions.
It was great to see several members deputising for Directors while those people are away. We know that Hartmut is acting for International while Don is away and this month we also had Judith Hyde, Barb Beed and Phil Wheatley deputising at Board meeting.
Members of the Brighton North Rotary Club were privileged to have as our guests at last week's meeting the team leader and three members of the first GSE team from District 9800 (then D280) that travelled to Canada for ten weeks in 1966. The evening was a fascinating insight into the lasting benefits of the GSE experience and a wonderful introduction for our sponsored team member, Kirsten Brewer.
Two members of Brighton North Rotary Club, Kate Strain and Kay Phillips, recently joined with members of Albert Park and Brighton clubs to establish a vegetable garden at Nganambala, one of the Top End group of schools in remote Northern Territory. The school had sufficient water for drinking but not for irrigation so the installation of a tank had to be part of the exercise. The focus was to promote better health through diet and knowledge.

Despite the somewhat wet weekend we hosted over 1,700 gardeners at the 4 houses we opened for the Garden Fest on the 13th and 14th of November. With some 30 Club Members and Friends volunteering for either the 9:30 am to 1:30pm morning shifts or the 1:30pm to 5:00pm afternoon shifts our Gate-keepers and Garden Guards did a fantastic job.

In linguistics, the Rebus Principle means using existing symbols, such as pictograms, purely for their sounds regardless of their meaning, to represent new words. Often used in word puzzles and games. Many ancient writing systems used the Rebus principle to represent abstract words, which otherwise would be hard to be represented by pictograms. Some linguists believe that the Chinese developed their writing system according to the rebus principle, and Egyptian hieroglyphs sometimes used a similar system. A rebus (Latin: "by things") is a kind of word puzzle that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words.

Wendy and Rob Warren visited the Club on our Grand Final Dinner and updated us on the functions she looks after at Victoria Police. Wendy is one of 20 senior sworn and un-sworn police officers selected by the Police Commissioner to participate in the Police Leadership Mentoring Program. It is a special achievment to be selected and we will hear from Wendy later in the year about her experience with the program.
The Club's annual celebration of the AFL Grand Final was made even more memorable with the decorations and fine selection of "Footy Food" - well done to the Fellowship Committee. Don Cullen is a member of our club who travels frequently to Tibetan villages that need help with setting up community orientated projects. These projects, in the main, build small enterprises, assist schools, health services and growing of food for self sufficiency. Our club has raised funds for Don to spend directly with the villagers and local suppliers to bring these humanitarian projects to fruition.
